Eco Engineering Acquiring Lighting Optimizers

Strategic acquisition expands Eco Engineering’s resources and expertise in the education and government customer segments

(January 22, 2015 Cincinnati, Ohio) – Eco Engineering, the largest independent design and build engineering firm in the US energy efficient lighting industry, announced today that it has successfully completed the acquisition of Lighting Optimizers USA, a regional lighting services firm headquartered in Tipp City, Ohio. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Lighting Optimizers, USA was founded in 2011 to provide turn-key, professional lighting retrofit design and implementation services for affiliated company Energy Optimizers USA (EOU) which specializes in the Educational and Government market segments. Over time, Lighting Optimizers grew to provide services to other Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and directly to end user customers. As EOU experienced rapid growth in the past few years servicing the complete energy efficiency needs of this marketplace, management found itself with increased challenges managing the growth of its lighting business.

Eco Engineering has acquired all of the assets of Lighting Optimizers and hired nearly all of the 30 employees on staff. The acquisition gives Eco increased capacity and specialized skills to offer expanded lighting upgrade services to its ESCO customers who focus on K-12, higher-education and government facilities; markets that Eco Engineering addresses with an ESCO partner. Guaranteed energy savings claims are often used in these markets to offset the costs associated with the energy efficiency project. Upgrades to lighting and lighting controls, the core focus of Eco Engineering, are often responsible for a very large percentage of the savings.

“Eco Engineering remains committed to helping our customers reduce their energy operating costs while making a positive impact on the environment,” said Tom Kirkpatrick, Eco Engineering President and CEO. “The acquisition of Lighting Optimizers strengthens our resources to better serve the K-12, higher-education and government markets.” Kirkpatrick added that “recent advances in LED lighting technology and advanced lighting control systems have provided opportunities for building owners who upgraded their lighting just a few years ago to reduce the lighting portion of their electric bill up to an additional 75%.”

In addition to serving its ESCO clients, Eco Engineering’s primary business is providing energy efficient lighting services to both Fortune 1000 firms and regional businesses. The company has a distinctive profile in that they are an engineering and design firm which comprehensively audits the existing lighting infrastructure of major facilities to optimize the savings potential from upgraded lighting systems, controls and technologies. Eco Engineering also provides turn-key execution services and performs all project implementation; build out of the new design and EPA compliant disposal services. In addition, the firm helps clients qualify for any federal, state or local utility incentives to reduce project expense and boost return-on-investment.
Eco Engineering completed over 500 projects in 2014 involving large office buildings, industrial facilities, schools, hospitals, hotels and distribution centers. The combined impact of these projects was a reduction of 100 million kilowatts of electricity per year and more than $10 million in annual energy savings for their customers. The company has been growing rapidly in recent years and expects continued double-digit growth as more and more businesses recognize the importance of sustainability and the huge potential for saving money on their electric bills.
